When to Trim or Cut Hedges

When and how often to prune your hedges depends largely on their age and the variety of shrub. For the first two years after planting formative pruning should be done in winter or early spring. After this maintenance trimming can be done at least once a year – two or three times a year for more formal hedges – between early spring and late summer.

The recommended frequency for trimming the most common types of hedges found in gardens are:

  • Box, Privet & Leylandii  – two or three times during the growing season
  • Holly – Once, in late summer
  • Yew & Hawthorn – Twice, in both the summer and autumn
  • Beech – Once in the late summer
  • Escallonia – As soon as it has finished flowering

Before we carry out any hedge work we always do a wildlife risk assessment and will advise postponing the trim if we find any evidence of nesting birds or other creatures in the hedge.

Why Hedges need Trimming

In a nutshell, hedges need regular trimming to keep them dense and compact, thereby keeping them neat, attractive and healthy.

An out-of-control hedge is not just unsightly, it also takes up space in your garden, can be a safety hazard, a nuisance to the neighbours, and cut out light from your property.

Unkempt hedges on property boundaries can obstruct passing pedestrians and impede the line of sight of vehicle drivers. They can also fall foul of the law pertaining to “high hedges” if a neighbour makes a complaint via the local council.

It’s therefore wise to keep your hedges professionally trimmed and cared for. If you do have a hedge that has grown out of control and become woody it can be brought back into line and returned to good health by experts like West Country Tree Services with a maintenance programme.

If you have a hedge that you no longer want on your property, we are able to remove it efficiently leaving the site tidy and clear behind us.
